Living Paycheck to Paycheck?

Posted by sue | As Heard On The Show | Wednesday 21 April 2010 8:27 am

Here are some ways to get control of your spending and give yourself some financial breathing room …

1. Save First — Starting with your next paycheck, look at the amount of the check, decide how much you want to put in your savings account and then work to pay the bills after that. It will take discipline, but it’s the only thing that actually works.

2. Eat at Home — Going out to eat regularly adds up to lot of money by the end of the month. Eat dinner at home and brownbag it at work. The savings will pile up over time.

3. Have Fun for Free — Whether it’s playing Wii with a few friends while playing bartender at your place or renting movies with your family, there are ways to have fun that involve less money than movies, nightclubs and restaurants.

4. Use the Library — With booksellers, online book shopping, iTunes music store and Netflix memberships, we forget that the library is completely free. So, instead of buying books or DVDs, check your local library first.

Dale Earnhardt Jr Jacket Returned!

Posted by sue | As Heard On The Show | Friday 16 April 2010 11:34 am

Last Friday night, Dawn Marie Wilson (no relation to Sue Wilson) was enjoying herself at the Miranda Lambert concert. Her leather Dale Earnhardt Jr jacket was draped over the back of her chair for most of the show. After the encore, she reached back to put it on, and it was gone. She was devastated. The jacket, she told Sue in an email sent the following morning , was not really worth that much monetarily, but to her it had great sentimental value. Her dad had given it to her as a gift, and it represented memories of their combined love of racing.

That following Monday, Sue read the email on the air during the Wynn and Wilson in the morning show on WQMX. The story was also posted on the morning show’s Facebook page. Calls flooded the studio lines and tons of comments were posted on Facebook–with everyone hoping for a happy ending….similar to the ending that came with a story about a guitar theft weeks before.

That story involved Country singer Justin Moore (famous for his hit “Small Town USA”). He had his guitar stolen from the stage after a performance in Michigan last month. He put a plea out via social networking asking for his guitar back. He said it had sentimental value…and encouraged the fan to do the right thing. Justin’s guitar was returned, with a note of apology. The fan said he was drunk and over-excited and just acted foolishly.

Alcohol sometimes makes people do dumb things…we all know that…and so on the air Monday, as Scott and Sue read Dawn’s email and put out the plea for the jackets return on the air and on Facebook, they compared the two incidents as probably alcohol-induced and asked for the jacket bandit to “do the right thing”. As Scott said “you’ll never feel good about wearing it.”

This morning, Scott and Sue opened a box that arrived in the mail. In it, was the jacket with a simple note that said: “Please accept my sincere apology.” We announced the jacket’s return on the air and on Facebook, and again, the response from listeners was overwhelming and positive, with the overall theme of “renewed faith in people doing the right thing.”.

Dawn Calls - thanks!

The jacket returns!!!

So…whoever you are…thanks for doing the right thing.

Follow-up: Naked Man Drinking Coffee Aquitted

Posted by sue | As Heard On The Show | Friday 16 April 2010 6:06 am

FAIRFAX, Va. - The jury deliberated for less than 20 minutes. They returned to the courtroom and declared Erick Williamson not guilty of indecent exposure.

One juror said she had a hard time not laughing during some of the testimony. Another juror said “it was easy.”

But it has not been easy for Williamson. Police entered his Springfield home with guns drawn last October. He has spent months fighting the charge in court. His feeling Wednesday was of “relief, unbelievable, weight off my shoulders after six months.”

Williamson acknowledges that he was naked inside his home on the day in question. His accuser, Yvette Dean, says she made eye contact with Williamson while he was standing naked in the doorway. She was walking her son to school. She testified that she gave Williamson the finger and had to shelter her son with her coat so that he could not see Williamson.

The defendant testified he never saw them and was busy drinking coffee and packing to move out of the house.

“I was not interested in exhibiting myself to anybody on the street, but in hindsight, now that that’s happened, I won’t have an open window in my house,” said Williamson.

A judge convicted him in Fairfax County’s General District Court. The appeal to county’s circuit court brought with it a jury.

Indecent exposure requires the government to prove intent. One juror said the prosecutor did not do that.

“People from the community are important to sit in judgment of people - not prosecutors, not judges, not police officers because absent these people from the community, he’d have this conviction over his head for the rest of his life,” said defense attorney Dickson Young.

Williamson says the charge has created issues in the custody of his daughter and cost him his job. He has been living in Newport News, Va.

He hopes to get the case expunged, so he has a clean record. As for his accuser, she testified in court Wednesday, but has chosen not to talk to the media about the case.

Want To Save Money? Change The Font In Your Printer.

Posted by sue | As Heard On The Show | Monday 12 April 2010 7:20 am

If you want to save $20 a year, just change the font in your printer. Why? Some fonts, such as Arial, require more ink. While individual users can save about $20 a year doing this, schools and businesses that do a lot of printing can save thousands of dollars annually. After examining data from Printer.com, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay made the switch. Printer.com ranked the most common fonts by how much ink they use, from least ink to most ink:
1. Century Gothic
2. Times New Roman
3. Calibri
4. Verdana
5. Arial
6. Sans Serif
7. Trebuchet
8. Tahoma
9. Franklin Gothic Medium
Specifically, Century Gothic uses about 30% less ink than Arial. Why? It’s all about the thickness of the lines. A font that has “narrow” or “light” in its name will use less ink than one with “bold” or “black.”

THE SIMPLE LIFE
Is the rat race over in America? Most folks say they live the simple life. In fact, 84% of respondents believe they live simply, according to a report by The Barna Group researchers. The stereotypical image of Americans is we are materialistic, but the vast majority says they live what they consider to be simple lives even before the economy put a crimp in spending power. Of course, that doesn’t mean Americans are taking avow of poverty, and 68% admit they try to keep up with the Joneses and get ahead in life. And 71% of respondents describe themselves as “deeply spiritual.”

LEFT HANDED? NOT SURE ABOUT THIS…
Lefties are an uptight bunch they feel more restrained and inhibited, a recent study reveals. Behavioral tests showed left-handers are more likely to feel anxiety, shyness or embarrassment about doing or saying what they want. In addition, they are more likely to agree with the statement: “I worry about making mistakes” and “Criticism or scolding hurts me quite a bit” “Left handers are more likely to hesitate, while righties tend to jump in a bit more,” reveals Dr. Lynn Wright, leader of the study at Scotland’s University of Abertay. “In lefties, the right half of the brain is dominate and it is this side that seems to control negative aspects of emotion. In righties, the left brain dominates.”

It seems money can buy happiness in men’s eyes, but women find greater joy in close relationships with their children, friends, co-workers and bosses, according to a recent global survey. The Nielsen Happiness Study showed that women are happier than men in 48 of 51 countries, mainly since money makes the world go round for guys and most of the world is suffering from hard times financially. The biggest difference in happiness ratings between men and women is in Japan, where women have 15% more joy. The survey team found three main drives of happiness: personal financial situation, mental health and career. Being satisfied with a spouse was also deemed vital to being content.
