Relationship Tips

Posted by sue | As Heard On The Show | Tuesday 30 March 2010 7:29 am

We found a cool list on CNN.com that talked about the 10 things to say to keep the peace in relationships. See if you agree with these:
1. “Thank you for your opinion. I’ll think about it.”
2. “Is this a good time for you?”
3. “Would you like my thoughts?”
4. “Why don’t we get the facts?”
5. “I need your help. Can you please…?”
6. “Let’s wait on this until we have more information.”
7. “What did you mean by that?” .
8. “I don’t like that, so why don’t we do this instead?”
9. “I’m sorry you’re upset.”
10. “Let me get back to you.”

Did You Know? (a collection of cool stuff we found)

Posted by sue | As Heard On The Show | Sunday 28 March 2010 8:49 pm

DID YOU KNOW?
The enormous amount of junk orbiting around Earth could knock a manned spacecraft out of the sky. That’s the prediction of NASA officials who say the 18,000 objects floating in space above our planet put everything from the Hubble Space Telescope to communications satellites in imminent danger. A recent collision between American and Russian satellites dramatically increased the danger to future space expeditions. The accident produced thousands of tiny piece of scrap that cant’s be detected by radar. These bits of debris could hit with enough velocity to damage or completely destroy a spacecraft. The military’s Space Surveillance Network attempts to protect astronauts by tracking the trash and issuing warnings if there’s a threat to the International Space Station or U.S. shuttle flights. But the agency says it can’t be responsible for every close call between commercial satellites. (Sun)

Did you also know?
Your DNA determines whether you know when to hold’em and know when to fold’em, says a recent study. Two types of chromosomes determine a person’s tendency to take financial risks, either with their money or someone else’s, say scientists at Chicago’s Northwestern University. “As we sort through the devastating consequences of the financial crisis,” says lead researcher Dr. Joan Chiao, “it might be useful to note how our genetic heritage is influencing our economic behavior.” For the study, 65 young men and women played an economic computer game that gave them a choice between two investments. One offered low returns for no risk. The other offered a big jackpot while risking a big loss. Then the scientists compared the individuals’ choices with the genes that influence two mood altering brain chemicals, serotonin and dopamine. The human Guinea pigs with the long version of the “serotonin gene” were 28% less likely to take big risks than participants with the gene’s short version. And the subjects with a certain kind of “dopamine gene” were 25% more likely to take big risks than people with other versions of the gene. Observes Chiao: “Just think about how the excessive risks taken by just a few affected so many, from large institutions to average people.” (National Examiner)

Anti-Aging Secret–The Sun?
A study recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition makes the astonishing point that you can slow down the aging process by five years just by spending a few minutes a week in the sun. Sun exposure is the best way to induce the body to produce vitamin D, and the researchers found that this important nutrient cuts down on DNA damage that can lead to age related illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. Just 20 minutes a week in the sun can deliver 90% of the vitamin D you need and it won’t cost you a dime. (Sun)

TV vs Internet
According to a new study by the Edison Research group, for the first time, given the choice between TV and the Internet, more people would choose to completely give up television. Fortunately, you won’t really have to make that choice until someone teaches a piano-playing cat how to dance and sing.

Household stuff toxic to pets

Posted by sue | As Heard On The Show | Thursday 25 March 2010 7:25 am

Re-printed wkyc.com

SOLON — We call them our best friends but did you know you something you think is a treat might kill your dog? We know to keep them away from the obvious like chemicals and pesticides but human food you eat could be toxic to your dog.

Lisa Siegler adores her year old minature golden doodle, Lucy.

“She is my baby. I got her for my fortieth birthday last year so she’s very special to me,” Lisa says.

As a puppy, Lucy got into all sorts of things, chewing shoes and socks, but when she found and ate a pack of sugarless gum, it nearly killed her. Lisa found a bit of wrapper and jumped on her computer. “I Googled is gum bad for dogs and everything that popped up was toxic.”

It’s the Xylitol ingredient that can cause a dog’s liver to fail and that’s what happened to Lucy.

Household items and plants toxic to pets

“If I had not noticed that little bit of wrapper she would have most likely died,” Lisa says.

Many pet owners sometimes forget that a dog’s system is very different from our own.

They can’t tolerate foods such as onions, chocolate, grapes or raisins. It’s poison to them.

Lisa called Animal Poison Control which is a service run by the ASPCA available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, call (888) 426-4435. Be aware that a $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.

The vet on duty instructed Lisa how to induce vomiting and they told her to rush Lucy to an emergency veterinary office. When she arrived, she was rushed right in. That’s when Lisa realized how serious the situation really was.

Lucy spent three days at the vet as doctors waited for her liver enzymes to get back under control. She bounced back and when all was said and done Lisa gratefully paid the $1400 vet bill. She no longer allows sugarless gum in her home.

“Xylitol is in lots things like pudding sugarless cough drops lots of sugarless human foods,” Lisa says.

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol sweetener commonly used as a sugar substitute. While it’s safe for human consumption, when it’s ingested by a dog it can cause a dangerous spike in insulin and in higher doses be toxic to the liver. Signs of toxicity can be seen as quickly as 30 minutes after xylitol ingestion in dogs. Symptoms include, vomiting, weakness, loss of coordination, depression, seizures, coma and liver failure.

De-Clutter
Open your eyes and look at all the stuff that’s cluttering up your home. Now think about what you actually need and what you could live without like CDs you don’t listen to, books you’ve finished, DVDs you don’t watch, video games you don’t play anymore, software, cameras, jewelry, clothing, collectibles, etc. You can take the things you don’t use or don’t really need and turn them into money to benefit the American Red Cross or other relief organizations. So even if you’re strapped for cash you probably have some valuable things cluttering up your home that can be used to help disaster victims.
Clearing your clutter will help you too. After you clear your clutter, your home will feel more positive and so will you. Here are some tips to help you get started.
1. Make A Date With Your Clutter — Be serious about getting rid of clutter. Set a day to start. Be reasonable with yourself about just how much you can accomplish. Give yourself a set amount of time to accomplish it.
2. Start Small — A big room might be too overwhelming so start with something small, like a drawer. Take it easy and do one thing, finish it, and then do another small thing.
3. Organize Your Stuff — Divide the big project of clearing clutter into smaller, more manageable clutter projects. Make a to do list and check items (2) things to sell for hurricane relief (3) gifts you’ll give to others (4) garbage.
4. Transforming Your Clutter Into Cash — There are a couple of ways to use your clutter for hurricane relief. You can sell your items on eBay and donate the proceeds to the American Red Cross or other relief groups. eBay has a special Giving Works program for charity listings where people can buy items that support nonprofit organizations. The items you auction will be grouped with other items that are specifically being auctioned to help charities. And shoppers can search for items that are being auctioned to help charities. But if you are unable to auction items online you can help out the old fashioned way by having a yard sale and donating the proceeds to the Red Cross or other relief organizations. You can also combine your items with friends and family and have a neighborhood, civic association or church sale.
